Should I be surprised at this take-up statistic, IE6 versus IE7?

IE stats from October 2007 for approx 1,000 unique visits to a sitePerhaps not, but nevertheless I am. I would have at least expected the reverse, IE7 to outweigh IE6. For a long time (years) Windows users have been fed Windows XP SP2 and that installation process was one of several that encourages people to turn on automatic updates. Automatic updates push IE7 out automatically, giving the user the option to reject it if they want.

All this is dull and known to most. But I was just plain surprised at the way around these two statistics were, 56% IE6 and 44% IE7.

Nice to see from the full report that Firefox is nearly 20%:

IE
816 / 70%
Firefox
215 / 19%
Safari
95 / 8%
Other
…the remainder

Taken from around 1,000 unique visits to a website over a few days, early Oct 2007.

  3. Use Windows? Use IE6? Go to IE7 (or other) and stay patched!
